How Is Republic Day Celebrated in India?

Republic Day is a day that is very close to the hearts of Indians. Republic Day is celebrated on a huge scale and in a grand manner in the capital of India, Delhi. The highlight of the republic day celebrations is the Republic Day Parade. The parade features displays and contingents of the armed forces, i.e. the Army, Air force, and the Indian Navy.

Before the republic day parade commences, the President of India pays his respects to all the soldiers who lost their lives in war by laying a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti Memorial at India Gate. This is followed by the entire gathering observing a silence of two minutes.

The President’s Address

The President addresses the nation with his annual Republic Day Speech. The speech is televised for the entire country to watch. In 2017, the President stated that India needed “argumentative” Indians and not “intolerant Indians”.

The Chief Guest

India also invites chief guests, often dignitaries from other countries, to be a part of the republic day celebrations. In 2017, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of United Arab Emirates graced the occasion. The republic day 2018 chief guest list includes the Heads of the ASEAN states.
